If you have been tasked to write a biography for school, you might be wondering how to go about it. Whether you are writing about famous entrepreneurs, a classical composer or perhaps an inspiring politician, the process of writing a biography is fairly straightforward.

Steps to write a biography:

  1. Research. Do your research and keep a note of your sources.
  2. Time-line. Do a time-line of important life-events for that person – birth, marriage, divorce, death.
  3. Education. When and where was this person educated and to what level.
  4. Noticeable accomplishments. When did the person launch their first business, compose their first symphony, run for office, etc.
  5. Make it relevant to you. There is often a good reason why you chose or were asked to study this person, so try to convey what you have learned from this persons story.
  6. Cite your sources. Very important for school or academic studies – Cite the book or website where you got your facts and if you are stating your own opinion, make that clear as well.

A good framework to start with is the time-line down the left hand side of an A4 page. At the top, note the date of birth, place of birth, parents. And at the bottom, the date of death (or if the person is still alive, the most recent news/life event).

Now fill out the spaces in between with childhood, education, schools, elements of success, marriage, divorce, scandals, lawsuits, etc. Focus on the areas of that persons life that is relevant to your subject. E.g. If you are writing a case study or biography of a famous entrepreneur, you should focus more on business successes and/or failures and what that person learned from it.

The amount of detail you need to add will depend on the total length of the assignment. If your biography only needs to be a 500 word essay, you can pretty much mention birth, death and some major accomplishments in between. If it needs to be a 3,000 word biography on the other hand, you need to add more of the details and this is where you can also add more meat on the achievements and what was learned from it.

Citing your sources

For academic and school assignments, it is critical that you cite the sources of your facts. This is done so that others can verify your facts, dispute your claims or check your thoroughness. If you do your citations properly and professionally it conveys a sense of authority on the subject so pay particular attention to get it right.
